About Nightshift
Nightshift is the open-source agent platform enterprises can own. Our managed offering, Nightshift Sovereign, packages it for production: instrument the AI a customer already runs, distill it into smaller models trained on their work, and hand the result back as a balance-sheet asset on the customer's infrastructure.
About the role
The Nightshift product surface is shipped, used by operators every day, and growing. We are hiring a Design Engineer to set the taste of every screen we add to it.
This role is taste-first. You can read a screen and tell us what is wrong with it without needing a spec. You know when 8 pixels is the right answer and when it is 12. You can ship the React to make the decision real, but the bar we hire against is the judgment, not the throughput. We will read your portfolio carefully and look at the small choices.
Representative projects
- Designing the streaming behavior, tool-call rendering, and failure surfaces of the agent chat
- Owning the design system: the tokens, primitives, motion, and the rules that age well as the product widens
- Cross-functional work with the runtime team on how agent state should feel: queued, running, partial, recovered
- Polish passes on operator surfaces that get used eight hours a day, where the bar is higher than a marketing page
You may be a good fit if you
- Have a strong, defensible point of view on type, color, spacing, and motion. The more opinionated, the better
- Can walk us through specific decisions in specific pieces of production UI you shipped
- Are fluent in Figma for spec, not just consumption
- Work in TypeScript and a modern Next.js / utility-CSS stack without it being the bottleneck
- Do not need a separate designer in the loop to ship something polished
Strong candidates may also have
- Open-source UI work we can read
- Background on developer tools, AI products, or other interfaces with non-trivial information density
- Contributions to a design system that other engineers actually used
Logistics
- Based in Miami, USA
- In-office expectation: in the Miami office at least three days a week
Candidates are encouraged to apply even without meeting all of the qualifications above.
